Bioplastics

Fraunhofer CCPE develops innovations in the field of bioplastics to reduce dependence on fossil raw materials and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Bioplastics are used across various industries including packaging, automotive, medical and textiles.

Additives play a crucial role in improving plastic properties. Antioxidants protect plastics from oxidation caused by heat, light, and mechanical stress, thus extending material lifespan. UV stabilizers are also important as they prevent plastic degradation from ultraviolet radiation, which is particularly significant for outdoor applications. Furthermore, additives can accelerate biological degradation of plastics. Plasticizers help improve flexibility and durability of plastics, expanding their application possibilities and extending their service life. Finally, bio-based fillers can improve mechanical properties of plastics while simultaneously increasing their environmental compatibility.

The circular economy is a central concept aiming at efficiently utilizing resources, minimizing waste, and keeping materials in the economic cycle for as long as possible. Fraunhofer CCPE works intensively to implement these principles in practice and develop innovative solutions for a sustainable future. A key component of the circular economy is the recycling and reuse of materials and components. By closing product and material loops, valuable resources can be saved and environmental impact reduced. Fraunhofer CCPE relies on cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary research to achieve these goals.

We examine the diversity of renewable raw materials, recyclable polymers, and their potential for bioplastic production. Renewable raw materials such as corn starch, sugar cane, cellulose, and algae offer a sustainable alternative to fossil raw materials. The materials produced from them are not only renewable, they can also be biodegradable, which increases their environmental compatibility.

Controlling and accelerating plastic degradation is a research area at Fraunhofer CCPE. Through the use of additives that control plastic degradation, we can specifically extend or shorten product lifespan according to application requirements.

Fraunhofer CCPE investigates composites from thermally more resistant scPLA filaments and a chemically identical PLA matrix. Here, a fabric from scPLA-PLA blended yarn is formed into self-reinforced organo-sheets. The goal is developing PLA-based single-component composite materials for technical applications. In recycling processes, these materials have a clear advantage over established fiber-reinforced systems and thus offer an option for obtaining recyclable composite materials.
